The Best Road Trip Routes in the American Southwest
The American Southwest is one of the greatest road trip destinations on earth — wide open highways, jaw-dropping landscapes, and campgrounds that feel like they’re on another planet. Here are the routes worth planning your life around.
Route 1: The Utah National Parks Loop
Start in Salt Lake City and hit all five Utah national parks: Zion, Bryce Canyon, Capitol Reef, Canyonlands, and Arches. Plan 10–14 days minimum. This is one of the most iconic RV routes in the country. Book campsites 6 months ahead — Zion fills up fast.
Route 2: Arizona Desert Classic
Phoenix to Sedona to the Grand Canyon South Rim, then east through Monument Valley into New Mexico. This loop delivers red rock canyons, saguaro desert, and the most photographed landscape in North America. Best driven October through April to avoid extreme summer heat.
Route 3: Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) South
San Francisco down to San Diego along Highway 1 and US-101. Stops include Big Sur, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, and Malibu. This route is narrower and winding — not ideal for large Class A rigs, but perfect for vans, truck campers, and small travel trailers. Allow 7–10 days.
Route 4: New Mexico–Texas High Desert
Santa Fe to Taos to White Sands National Park to Big Bend National Park. Big Bend is one of the least-visited national parks and one of the most spectacular. Remote, rugged, and breathtaking. Bring extra water and fuel — services are sparse.
Any of these routes will reset your perspective on what’s out there. The Southwest rewards slow travel — don’t rush it.
