How to Build Out a Van for Full-Time Living

Van life looks simple from the outside — throw a mattress in the back and go. But a well-built van that’s comfortable for months on the road requires planning, prioritization, and the right sequence of decisions.

Choose the Right Van First

The three most popular platforms are the Ford Transit, Mercedes Sprinter, and Ram ProMaster. Each has tradeoffs. The Transit is the most affordable and easiest to find parts for. The Sprinter has the most aftermarket support but costs more to maintain. The ProMaster has the widest cargo floor, ideal for shorter builders.

For most people starting out: high-roof Ford Transit, 148″ extended wheelbase. It gives you the most living space, standing room, and flexibility.

Build in This Order

  • Insulation first — spray foam the wheel wells, rigid foam board the walls and ceiling. This affects temperature and noise for the life of the build.
  • Electrical second — run all wiring before wall panels go up. Plan for at least 200Ah of lithium battery and 200W of solar minimum.
  • Flooring and walls third — use lightweight materials; every pound matters for fuel efficiency.
  • Bed and furniture last — measure twice, build once. A fixed bed vs. convertible is the most personal decision in any van build.

The Systems That Matter Most

Water: a 20–40 gallon fresh tank with a 12V pump and simple hand pump backup covers most situations. Electrical: lithium beats lead-acid for van life in almost every scenario — lighter, faster charging, deeper discharge. Ventilation: a Maxxair or Fan-Tastic roof vent fan is non-negotiable for temperature and air quality.

Your first build won’t be perfect. That’s fine. Most full-time van lifers rebuild or modify within the first year as they discover what they actually need on the road. Start functional, not fancy.
