The Ultimate RV Setup Checklist for First-Time Buyers
Buying your first RV is exciting. It’s also easy to overlook the things that matter most. This checklist covers what to inspect, what to set up, and what to stock before you hit the road.
Pre-Purchase Inspection
- Check the roof for soft spots, cracks, or delamination — water damage is the #1 RV killer
- Test every slide-out, awning, and slide mechanism
- Run all appliances: fridge, oven, furnace, AC, water heater
- Inspect the undercarriage for rust, leaks, or damage
- Check tire age (DOT code) — replace anything over 6 years old regardless of tread
- Test all electrical outlets, USB ports, and 12V systems
Essential Setup Before Your First Trip
- Install a carbon monoxide and propane detector if not already present
- Add a surge protector for shore power hookups
- Set up a basic tool kit: zip ties, silicone sealant, duct tape, electrical tape
- Learn how to winterize and de-winterize your specific model
- Practice connecting to water, sewer, and electric at home before arriving at a campsite
What to Stock on Day One
- 30 days of shelf-stable food as a baseline
- Water filtration system or enough jugs for dry camping
- Leveling blocks and wheel chocks
- Sewer hose kit with connectors and gloves
- Basic first aid kit
- Flashlights and extra batteries
The first trip is always a learning experience no matter how prepared you are. But walking through this checklist beforehand eliminates the most common beginner mistakes and gets you on the road with confidence.
