RV financing isn't complicated once you understand how it works — but a few common mistakes can cost you thousands. Here's everything you need to know to get approved at the best rate, whether your credit is excellent or you're rebuilding.

How RV Loans Work

RV loans are installment loans — similar to auto loans but with longer terms and higher amounts. The RV itself serves as collateral. Loan terms typically range from 36 months (short-term, small loan) to 240 months (20 years, for loans over $100K). Most lenders require the RV to be a certain age — commonly under 10–15 years — and in good condition.

What Lenders Actually Look At

  • Credit score: 700+ gets the best rates; 650–699 qualifies for standard programs; 580–649 will require more down payment
  • Debt-to-income ratio (DTI): Most lenders want your total monthly debt payments under 43–45% of gross income
  • Down payment: 10–20% is standard; strong credit buyers sometimes qualify for 0% down
  • Loan-to-value (LTV): Lenders typically won't finance more than 100–115% of the RV's NADA value
  • Employment stability: 2 years at same employer or consistent self-employment income helps significantly

Current Rate Ranges (2026)

Credit ScoreTypical APR RangeTerm Available
750+5.99% – 7.99%Up to 240 months
700–7497.99% – 10.99%Up to 180 months
650–69910.99% – 14.99%Up to 120 months
580–64914.99% – 19.99%Up to 84 months

Rates vary by lender, loan amount, and RV type. These are illustrative ranges, not guaranteed offers.

How to Get Approved with Bad Credit

Bad credit doesn't automatically disqualify you. Here's what helps most:

  • Larger down payment: 20–30% down reduces lender risk significantly
  • Co-signer: A creditworthy co-signer can unlock better rates
  • Newer, lower-cost RV: Lenders prefer units under $50K for challenged-credit buyers
  • Specialized RV lenders: Banks like Southeast Financial and Lyon Financial specialize in RV loans and often approve where banks won't
  • Credit unions: Often more flexible than banks for members

3 Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Shopping by monthly payment: Always negotiate the all-in purchase price first. Monthly payment focus gets you stretched into longer, more expensive terms.
  2. Skipping pre-approval: Without pre-approval you don't know your real budget, and dealers will use that uncertainty against you.
  3. Only using dealer financing: Dealers mark up rates. Always compare with an outside lender or credit union before accepting dealer financing.
