Tires cause more RV trip-ending failures than any other component, and almost all of those failures are preventable with pressure, age and load discipline.

Pressure: cold, correct, constantly

  • Check pressure cold — before driving, not at the fuel stop 50 miles in.
  • Inflate to the value for your actual load (the placard value, or the tire maker’s load/inflation table if you have weighed the rig) — not the max on the sidewall by default, and never below placard.
  • A tire monitoring system (TPMS) with sensors on every position, trailer included, is the single best early-warning device you can buy — slow leaks become alerts instead of shredded sidewalls.

Age beats tread

RV tires usually die of old age, not wear. Sunlight and sitting crack the rubber from the inside out while the tread still looks fine. Find the DOT date code on the sidewall (a 4-digit week/year, e.g. 2523 = week 25 of 2023). Common practice: inspect closely from 5 years, replace by 7 regardless of appearance — sooner for trailers stored outdoors.

Load: the silent killer

An overloaded tire runs hot, and heat is what actually causes blowouts. Weigh the rig loaded for a real trip — per axle if possible — and compare against the tire load ratings. Uneven left/right loading counts too.

The walk-around habit

  • Before every travel day: visual check for cracks, bulges, and anything stuck in the tread; lug nuts torque-checked periodically on trailers.
  • In storage: out of direct sun, covers on, moved occasionally to prevent flat-spotting.
  • Carry a quality torque wrench and know your spare situation before you need it.

Before your next trip: run the free 47-item pre-trip checklist. Gearing up? The Camp-Ready Gear Guide ($17) covers 50 picks by budget tier, and the RV Life Launchpad course ($97) walks the whole system from rig choice to life on the road.
