Towing a trailer safely comes down to numbers printed on stickers most people never read. Here are the ones that matter and how they fit together.

The weight ratings that matter

  • GVWR — the maximum the trailer can weigh fully loaded. Not the brochure “dry weight”; you will never tow it dry.
  • Tow rating — the maximum your vehicle may pull. Compare it to the trailer’s GVWR, not its dry weight, and leave margin: a common rule of thumb is to stay around 80% of the rating.
  • Tongue weight — the downward force on the hitch, ideally 10–15% of loaded trailer weight. Too little causes sway; too much overloads the rear axle.
  • Payload — the sticker in your door jamb. Tongue weight, passengers and cargo all count against it, and it runs out before the tow rating does on most trucks and SUVs.

Weight distribution and sway control

A weight-distributing hitch uses spring bars to push part of the tongue weight back onto the tow vehicle’s front axle and the trailer axles, restoring steering feel. Most are paired with friction or cam sway control. If your trailer is more than about half your tow vehicle’s weight, plan on one.

Trailer brakes and the controller

Most travel trailers have electric brakes that only work through a brake controller in the tow vehicle. Set the gain per the controller’s manual on a quiet road: increase until the trailer brakes just short of locking on a firm stop, then back off slightly. Check the breakaway cable and battery every trip — it is the system that stops the trailer if it ever separates.

Before every tow

  • Coupler latched, locked and pinned; safety chains crossed under the tongue.
  • Lights: brake, turn, running — walk around and check all of them.
  • Tire pressure on both vehicles at the placard values, checked cold.
  • Mirrors extended or towing mirrors fitted; you need to see the trailer’s rear corners.

Before your next trip: run the free 47-item pre-trip checklist. Gearing up? The Camp-Ready Gear Guide ($17) covers 50 picks by budget tier, and the RV Life Launchpad course ($97) walks the whole system from rig choice to life on the road.
