Match the hitch to tongue weight, not trailer weight — tongue weight typically runs 10 to 15 percent of loaded trailer weight on a conventional trailer. Check the tow vehicle's receiver class and the payload sticker on the door jamb before anything else; payload runs out before towing capacity does more often than people expect.
